Just across from the Hotel de Ville begins a walking mall that snakes through a few blocks of "old" Angouleme.

This area while attractive and in good repair made me feel more than a little conflicted. Though I enjoyed how the streets were closed to all but deliveries allowing one to roam and enjoy the architecture and ambiance of this old section of town, it all seemed to be ruined by the mix of upscale and common chain stores running nearly the entire length of the plaza. While I suppose that is what one should expect from a mall, it was still sad to see a country that stereotypically hated Americans have a shopping district filled with so many of "our" stores.
